As you may recall from my earlier Savor the Day blog, my chum John in the UK was brought low health-wise, so he started to savor the day by constructing a LEGO kit for the Millennium Falcon from Star Wars. In order to wring the maximum amount of enjoyment from this project, John divided the 420 instructions into 30 groups, permitting himself to complete only 14 instructions a day and only on weekdays at that. Each weekday morning, John sends me a photo showing the current state of play.

As I further reported in my It’s Not the Size of Your Starship blog, we were forced to take a brief hiatus a few weeks ago when John was rushed to the hospital. Thankfully, he was recently released and returned home. Today, he sent me a photo of the completed Millennium Falcon.

I must admit that this looks tantalizingly tasty. I’m tempted to build one myself. I can easily envisage it hanging from the ceiling in my office, gently swinging just above my computer monitors, so I could look at it longingly whenever I feel the urge to head out into the great beyond.

But what are we to do now? Is this the end of the story? “No!” I cry, “A thousand times no!” In fact, John previously ordered a LEGO Ultimate Collector Series version of the A-Wing Starfighter from Star Wars: Return of the Jedi, which arrived a few days ago as I pen these words.

The inner box makes mention of the fact that this model (number 75275) is suitable for persons 18 and older (thank goodness John and I both qualify, so we won’t have to send it back) and comprises 1,673 pieces (I hope they’re all there).

John tells me that the instruction book boasts 570 instructions, so dividing this by 30 gives 19 instructions a day, which will take six weeks since he takes the weekends off to recuperate (building spaceships is no easy task).

John is planning to officially commence the build (cue roll of drums and fanfare of sarrusophones) on Monday 5 April 2021, and I’m going to post a brief blog each day showing the current state of play. At the end, I was thinking of creating a collage of all the images that we can print out and hang on our walls to show a job well done. So, I hope you will join us for Part 1 on Monday, and thereafter follow along with us and gasp in awe as John builds a starfighter with his own bare hands.
