Phew! As I mentioned in Day 2 of this soon-to-be-epic mega-mini-series, I was poised to finish re-reading the final few chapters of Anvil of Stars by Greg Bear. Well, I did so yesterday evening, and the ending was just as exciting as I remembered it to be.

As you will doubtless recall, restricting himself to only 19 instructions a day, my chum John is building a LEGO Ultimate Collector Series version of the A-Wing Starfighter from Star Wars: Return of the Jedi.

Today, John progressed to the third set of 19 instructions, after which he emailed me to say, “LEGO Funday, although still not very LEGOi. More work on the complex middle section with another gear wheel in the middle on the spindles going out either side. There’s a yellow piece going through the middle that has a red circular piece at either end. If you turn the spindle it brings down another red circular piece on top of the first one. The fun bit is that I have no idea as to what the purpose of this is in what I thought was going to be a totally static model. We will find out more later on.”

I was just looking at the picture of the finished Starfighter on the box as depicted in the Day 0 blog. On the one hand, it would be nice to have a real version of this bodacious beauty. I think it could be squeezed side-wise into a 3-car garage, and it would certainly make short work of getting to my office, even during rush hour. On the other hand, remembering how cramped I used to find myself on regular airplanes prior to the pandemic, I think something with a tad more legroom would suit me better — perhaps something like the Millennium Falcon or Serenity (see also It’s Not the Size of Your Starship…). Although neither of these beauties would fit in the parking lot (a.k.a. car park in England) at work, at least I’d be able to stretch my legs in-between performing tall tales of derring-do.

How about you? If you had your choice of any fictional spaceship (along with an unlimited fuel-and-supplies credit card), which one would you opt for?
