If you’d asked me a couple of years ago, I would have told you that I wasn’t a big fan of “shoot-em-up” video games. Of course, that was before I acquired my Oculus Rift virtual reality (VR) system and was exposed to games like Arizona Sunshine and Robo Recall.

On the other hand, I’ve long had a soft spot for puzzle-solving games, like Riven. Until recently, however, really good VR implementations, like Obduction, have been in short supply.

By comparison, there are some amazing non-VR offerings. For example, have you ever seen the game called The Room on the iOS App Store? This is an incredibly sophisticated puzzle from the little scamps at Fireproof Games that will keep you busy for ages. The fact that it’s got 4.8 out of 5 stars with over 2,500 voting for it has to tell you something. Unfortunately, although this game was beautifully rendered in 3D, it was still presented on a 2D screen (sad face).

Now, although I love my Oculus Rift, I do dislike the time it takes me to set everything up with all the sensors, and I really hate being tethered to a host processor with trailing cables, so — as I wrote in Time for an Oculus Quest? — I’ve been seriously hoping that one of these little beauties may make an appearance in my future.

Well, I think the scales may just have tipped in my favor, because my wife (Gina the Gorgeous) loved playing The Room on her iPad, and I just heard that a new game called The Room VR: A Dark Matter is coming to the Oculus Quest in early 2020.

Oooh! How exciting. According to the Fireproof Games website: “The game begins deep within The British Museum in London, where the disappearance of an esteemed Egyptologist prompts a Police investigation into the unknown. Explore cryptic locations, examine fantastic gadgets and discover an otherworldly element which blurs the line between reality and illusion.”

My only problem now is that I need to use The Room VR: A Dark Matter to persuade Gina that an Oculus Quest is just what I need for Christmas, but — as soon as this game hits the streets — the chances of my getting to see it on my Quest fall to zero. This is a conundrum worthy of The Room’s creators themselves.
